Although marijuana remains at the federal level illegal to grow or partake of, four states have now passed their own laws legalizing the recreational use of the substance. Colorado and Washington were the first of these, with voters in a pair of late-2012 referendums building on a growing nationwide acceptance of medical marijuana to pass the first state laws okaying the cultivation, sale, and use of marijuana for other purposes.
